Celebrating 200 Years of Stories, Land & Legacy

This year , descendants of one of the first arrivals on Kangaroo Island and the Gilfillan family at Antechamber bay will celebrate 200 years since Nat Thomas an English sailor and his partner and mother of his four children Betty ,a full blood Tasmanian Aboriginal, built their home over looking back stairs passage on the North Eastern coast of the island. This arrival predated the settlement at Kingscote in 1836, which was unsuccessful and later the official settlement in Adelaide.

Andy Gilfillan says “ It appears that Nat and Betty had a significant , committed relationship and there are well documented articles on their lives together, Betty used the skill from Tasmania to hunt and snare wallabies and care for her young family, she made clothing for Nat and her children, from the skins, Nat was involved in Lighthouse construction and worked as light house keeper, as well as sealing,, whaling, piloting vessels, goat and sheep farming”

Saturday March the 14th 2026, the original National trust listed homestead and the farm will be open for the general public , where the original two rooms built by Nat and Betty date back to 1826. The oldest fig tree planted by one of Nat and Betty’s daughter, Hannah Simpson in 1854 and two ruins and various farm implements from the 1800’s as well as the shearing shed built in the late 1800’s by Nat Simpson, Nats grandson, will be available for visitors to see.

Andy says, “ The fact that Kangaroo island had been uninhabited for thousands of years. and there was no displacement of indigenous people would have been very appealing for new settlers and the opportunity for Betty to escape this on Tasmania would have been significant, there is good evidence that their relationship was not unlike those of today and the descendants should feel very proud to be connected with such an enterprising and fascinating couple”

After a long year, we bet you’re keen to unwind, get away from the hustle and bustle and treat yourself to some much-needed relaxation and quality time with your loved ones. We have just the solution – a getaway at Antechamber Bay Retreats nestled on beautiful Kangaroo Island.

Antechamber Bay is one of South Australia’s finest coastal havens boasting expansive native bush and bountiful wildlife stretched along four unspoilt kilometres of secluded white-sandy beach.

Here you can indulge your senses and enhance your wellbeing in the privacy and comfort of two distinct beach houses, Nats and The Kona.

Retreat owner Kate Gilfillan says her family has welcomed visitors to their 3500 acre working farm since acquiring it more than 60 years ago.

“It’s the oldest working farm in South Australia,” says Kate.

“My husband Andy and his father bought the farm about 65 years ago. Andy went to school in Adelaide and went off to work on several properties up north and in Western Australia before returning home to help run the farm.

“We just love it here; the island is so special and offers so much heritage and history.”

Historically known as Creek Bay, Antechamber Bay was first settled in the 1820s by two Kangaroo Island legends – English sealer and whaler Nat Thomas and his Tasmanian Aboriginal wife Betty.

Kate says the area offers a ‘living slice of maritime history’ and aims to share the richness of its unique heritage with all who visit.

“Nat Thomas was a whaler and sealer and he thought it was the best vantage point to view the whales and seals from the ocean,” she said. “Andy still finds Aboriginal stones on the property to this day. He also found the pencil Nat Thomas used to draw his stills, and we love that St Albans Lighthouse and Cape Willoughby Lighthouse still both operate to this day to keep everyone safe.”

Both Nat’s and The Kona are inviting, family-friendly homes and each has its own authentic character and easy-going charm.

Over the generations, Nat’s homestead has acquired modern amenities whilst still retaining its old-world charm in honor of its seafaring founder Nat Thomas. With epic ocean views over the mainland, Nat’s is suitable for a romantic getaway or a hub for family and friends and is fully equipped with a modern contemporary kitchen, barbecue and outdoor entertaining area during your stay. You’re bound to be greeted by kangaroos, possums and wallabies, along with an array of birdlife daily.

In contrast, The Kona is a bright, easy going three-bedroom farm cottage with views of grazing sheep and rolling pasture, edged by native bushland. Named after a grand-four mastered American schooner that ran aground on nearby Scraper Shoal, it offers open plan living spaces, a large front deck with outdoor barbecue and dining area and is a beautiful vantage point to spot passing ships, wildlife at dusk and dawn and unwind and capture the essence of Creek Bay.

And previous guests have spoken highly of their stay saying: “We have returned to Antechamber Bay seven times. We drive over from Tasmania which says a lot for the allure of this Kangaroo Island gem”.

Another former guest adds: “If you want a great escape this is the place. Both houses have amazing views with great facilities”.

“The setting is amazing, you look out on the ocean surrounded by sheep, kangaroos and beautiful birdlife”, says another.

Kate says their point of difference is ‘seclusion’.

“It’s a really unique experience where you have access to a 1000-acre beach, there are beach and bush walking trails, we’re very sustainable on the property and we are very mindful of the bush, we have solar panels and there’s a good balance,” says Kate.

Here you’ll find a pristine 4km beach encased by towering sand dunes and untouched bushland. If you own a 4WD, you can let down your tyres and drive straight onto the beach for a day of surf and sand, or pack your rod and cast a line among the local fishermen on the beach jetty which dates back to 1918. Emu Bay is about an hour’s drive from Antechamber Bay Retreats.

4. Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island

Once voted Australia’s best beach, the lurid turquoise waters of Vivonne Bay are postcard perfection. This iconic horseshoe-shaped beach stretches six kilometres with snow-white sand and eye-piercing blue waters bookended by distant dunes to the north and a fisherman-lined jetty to the south. Spend a day exploring countless rockpools, building sandcastles and spotting dolphins frolicking on the horizon. False Cape Wines Opens Up Just Down The Road

We are so excited that a NEW Cellar Door has opened just down the road from Antechamber Bay Retreats! Julie & Jamie Helyar have opened False Cape Wines on Willson River Rd, about a 10-15 minute drive (or a 25 minute e-bike ride) from Nat’s & Kona.

The eclectic and rustic cellar door was hand built by the Helyar’s on their property, “made from recycled wood, jetty timbers and stone sourced on the property”. It’s the perfect place to relax with a delicious platter and a wine tasting flight! We definitely recommend False Cape Wines for any of our guests visiting the island.

South Australia Traveller have recently selected the “Ten best rooms with views in South Australia” and we are delighted to announce that Antechamber Bay Retreats on Kangaroo Island has been announced as number four.

Perhaps original Kangaroo island settler and light house builder, Nat Thomas, who chose this location to build his house in 1825, was not only interested in ekeing out a living but also enjoyed a glass or two of rum and a bit of wallaby on the grill as he surveyed this award winning spectacular view from his piece of secluded paradise!
